Postgraduate Medical Education

Graduate Medical Education (GME) at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) and Yale School of Medicine (YSM) offers a broad range of postgraduate training across specialties. While we primarily train physicians through a wide range of specialty and subspecialty programs, we also prepare future healthcare leaders in clinical informatics, dentistry, genetics and genomics, clinical neuropsychology, podiatry, and therapeutic medical physics. In 2025–2026, YNHH and YSM sponsored 182 postgraduate training programs, including 109 ACGME-accredited programs, twenty-two programs accredited by other accrediting or certification bodies, and fifty-one nonaccredited (locally approved) subspecialty programs in the following departments.

Applicants must be graduates of an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school in the United States or hold a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to enroll in GME training programs. Prerequisite training requirements vary for nonphysician postgraduate training programs.

The senior associate dean for GME and the ACGME designated institutional official (DIO), in conjunction with the institution’s Graduate Medical Education Committee, provides oversight over the GME programs. The senior associate dean for GME serves as a cabinet member of the dean’s office and the deputy dean for education’s office, enabling the integration of GME trainees into educational and research activities in collaboration with several associate deans and directors responsible for undergraduate and continuing medical education.
