Consultations and Workshops

We encourage students and researchers to meet one-on-one with a public health librarian for advice on their research projects, as consumers of evidence (finding and appraising resources), and as producers of evidence (disseminating theses and publishing articles). Librarians also visit classes, student organizations, departments, and labs with tailored presentations and hands-on instruction, and collaborate on evidence synthesis publications.

Librarians offer regular workshops on such topics as PubMed and other literature databases, literature reviews, systematic reviews, expert searching, research impact, bioinformatics, geographic information systems, citation management, research data management, and more.

  • Workshops
  • Video tutorials
  • StatLab consultants for advice on statistics and geospatial tools
  • Research Data Management support includes instruction, training, collaborations, and consultations with the data librarian for the health sciences.
  • Bioinformatics Support includes free training for and access to Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, MetaCore, Partek Flow, BIOBASE, Qlucore, etc, plus consultations and collaborations with Bioinformatics librarians.

Resources

The Cushing/Whitney Medical Library provides a comprehensive collection of ebooks, electronic journals, clinical reference tools, databases, evidence-based practice resources, image collections, educational software, and print books and journals in support of programs in public health as well as medicine, nursing, physician associate training, bioinformatics, and the basic sciences. Access includes over 50,000 electronic books, 23,000 electronic journals, 110 databases, and more than 400,000 print volumes. Its holdings also include all Yale medical student theses, many of which are available online.

Our interlibrary loan service provides fast, free, electronic access to chapters and articles through interlibrary loan or scanning. Print books from other Yale libraries and Borrow Direct schools can be delivered to the medical library circulation desk quickly, and print books can also be mailed to a student’s home address (in the United States).

Library Spaces and Technology

Technology and Printing

Windows and Mac laptops are available for loan to medical center students needing a computer for short-term use. Additionally, Yale ID holders can borrow digital cameras, camcorders, chargers, and tablets at the Circulation Desk.

Windows and Mac desktop computers are available throughout the medical library, with software such as Microsoft Office, EndNote, Adobe Creative Suite, and statistics and GIS programs (SAS, SPSS, ArcGIS, etc.). Yale researchers have access to black-and-white and color printers and copiers, as well as two scanning stations (Windows and Mac) in the 24/7 room.

A high-performance workstation in the 24/7 room is equipped with a suite of licensed and open source tools, such as BRB-Array Tools, Cytoscape, and Qlucore, and can process, manage, analyze, and visualize data in a variety of formats. Access to this workstation can be reserved by any Yale researcher.

Study Spaces

There are reservable group and individual study spaces throughout the medical library. Study carrels and tables are located on all levels of the library. The Morse Reading Room and Historical Library Reading Room are designated as quiet study spaces.

  • Medical Historical Library (https://library.medicine.yale.edu/historical) contains one of the world’s finest collections of rare medical books, journals, prints, posters, drawings, and photographs, as well as current works in the history of medicine.
  • The Cushing Center (https://library.medicine.yale.edu/cushingcenter), located in the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, houses a unique collection of materials once owned by Dr. Harvey Cushing. The center is the home of the Harvey Cushing Brain Tumor Registry, which consists of approximately 600 brain specimens, glass-plate negatives, and accompanying patient files from the early twentieth century.
  • The Wellness Room (https://library.medicine.yale.edu/cushingwhitney-medical-library-wellness-room), located in the Morse Reading Room, is a space for all Yale and YNHH affiliates to enjoy a quiet moment away from work and study environments.
  • Technology Support Service Center (https://library.medicine.yale.edu/services/library-technology/support)is located on the E-Level.
  • 24/7 Computer and Study Space is available. When the library is closed, students can enter the 24/7 space through through the stairwell to the left of the main library entrance.

In addition to the Medical Library, students are invited to use other Yale University libraries. Two of the more popular libraries for YSPH students are Marx Library and Sterling Memorial Library.
