The Program for Biomedical Ethics (PBE) at Yale School of Medicine serves as a nexus for a community of individuals from throughout the medical campus and beyond who share a common interest in bioethics. The PBE exists to foster and support three overlapping fields: bioethics education, bioethics research, and clinical ethics consultations. The PBE incorporates faculty and trainees from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, Yale Law School, Yale Divinity School, as well as Yale New Haven Hospital staff and others who share an interest in education, research, and clinical practice in the field of medical ethics. 

Each academic year, the PBE offers an evening seminar series with nationally recognized experts from Yale and around the world. The PBE also coordinates the ethics education of Yale medical students, nursing students, PA students, and resident physicians over the course of their training, including didactic lectures and small-group classes, as well as opportunities to concentrate, undertake electives, pursue scholarship, or write a thesisin biomedical ethics. The PBE also provides educational opportunities for other members of the Yale medical community, such as journal clubs, working groups, and special conferences. 

Beyond bioethics education, the PBE conducts research in the interdisciplinary fields of bioethics, drawing upon philosophy, law, and social-behavioral sciences. In clinical practice, the PBE’s interdisciplinary team provides bioethics consultations for families, researchers, hospital administrators, and clinicians.
