Transfer Credit Policy

At the time of admissions, a student who has taken prior coursework that could be applicable towards their degree at YSN may ask for it to be reviewed for transferring into YSN. The appointed Admissions Transfer Credit Committee will be composed of faculty.

For determination of transfer of credit, the prior coursework must demonstrate that the student has met the AACN Essential Competencies for that student’s plan of study.

The determination will be made upon admission to the program. If the course is currently in progress, the student will need to show evidence of successful completion of the course prior to their first term of enrollment. Only students in the M.S.N. program are eligible to transfer credits. Transfer credits will not be allowed in the GEPN or D.N.P. programs. Ph.D. students should check with the university registrar regarding Graduate School of Arts and Sciences policies.

Once the credits are approved to be transferred in, on a student’s transcript it will indicate the approved courses from the accredited institution (up to two courses) with the credits, but no grade impacting their GPA at YSN. The courses will count towards the appropriate requirements in a student’s plan of study.

To be eligible for transfer credit toward courses for a Yale Nursing School degree, a course completed at another school must meet the following requirements:

  1. The course must have been taken at a CCNE accredited institution.
  2. The course must have been taken at the graduate or professional level.
  3. The student must have completed a baccalaureate degree before taking the course.
  4. The course should be clearly relevant to the student’s program at the nursing school.
  5. The course must have been taken within the five years before matriculation at the nursing school.
  6. No more than two courses will be transferred in.
  7. The minimum grade accepted for transfer credit is B or its equivalent.
  8. A syllabus with objectives must be provided along with an official transcript.
