Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the ADA as Amended Act, Student Accessibility Services (SAS) engages in an interactive process with students with disabilities and/or temporary injuries to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations. Each student’s request for accommodations is reviewed through an individualized process, and accommodations are determined on a case-by-case, course-by-course basis. Accommodations may be academic, co-curricular, residential or employment related, and are implemented to mitigate to the greatest extent possible the impact of barriers the student experiences to provide equal access to the full breadth of the Yale educational experience. Accommodations cannot alter a fundamental component of a program or course. As such, SAS collaborates with faculty and staff through the interactive process to discuss the reasonableness of specific accommodations in relation to the required elements of a course or program. Once approved for accommodations, students will be notified and provided an accommodation letter to share with their faculty. All accommodation and/or disability related information received by a faculty or staff member should be kept confidential. Conversations between faculty, staff, and students about accommodations should be private. Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact SAS to discuss the coordination of accommodations or concerns about an accommodation for a student. Additional information about accommodations is available on the SAS website. SAS can be contacted at sas@yale.edu.
